Bar Soaps - Are Natural Soaps Really Drying for Skin?

Bar soaps have been a staple in many households for generations, but there are common myths surrounding its effects on the skin. One of the most prevalent myths is that natural soaps - both bar and liquid - are drying for the skin. But is this really true?

Are natural soaps really drying for the skin?

Contrary to popular belief, not all natural soaps are drying for the skin. In fact, many modern natural soaps are formulated with very moisturizing ingredients such as olive oil, sunflower oil, sweet almond oil and other good oils. These ingredients help to hydrate and nourish the skin, leaving it feeling soft and smooth.

Additionally, with modern science and technology, the science behind the soap making process is more well understood and we can formulate soaps to completely use up all the lye used in soap making so that there are no more harshness in the soaps.

Why is it not drying?

Natural soaps are typically made using a process called cold process soap making, which retains the glycerin that is naturally produced during the soap making process. Glycerin is a humectant, meaning it attracts moisture to the skin, helping to keep it hydrated. This is why natural soaps are less likely to strip the skin of its natural oils and cause dryness.

Additionally, the formula of the oils used as the base for natural soaps make a big difference to how moisturising and mild the soap will be. The more moisturising oils there are, the more gentle the soap will be. At Tsuki Soap, we prioritise moisturising properties in our soaps and balance them with a gentle cleanse, so our soaps do can clean without drying.

How is natural soap actually good for the skin?

In addition to being moisturizing, natural soaps often contain beneficial ingredients like essential oils, herbs, and clays that can help improve the overall health of the skin. These ingredients can have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, making natural soap a great choice for those with sensitive or problem skin.

So, the next time you hear someone say that natural soaps are drying for the skin, you can confidently debunk that myth. With the right formulation, natural soaps are actually be a nourishing and beneficial addition to your skincare routine.
